The Culture

MASONIC CULTURE

There is great richness to the history, tradition and culture of the Egyptian Masonic Rites of Memphis-Misraïm; Masonic Rites which have been practised for more than two centuries and are worthy of veneration and respect.

The Rites were officially revealed in the eighteenth century, deriving from the magisterial works of Cagliostro, Tschoudy, di Sangro, Pernety and Bedarride; yet their mysterious origins are to be found wherever the Supreme Mysteries have been taught and preserved across the globe: among the ruins of Memphis, Thebes and Heliopolis; in the Mysteries of Eleusis and Samothrace; in the Holy Qabalah of the Hebrew Patriarchs; in the Bronze Age astro-theurgy of the Druids; in the mystic traditions of Saharan and sub-Saharan Africa; in the Gnostic gospels; in the symbols of the Incas and Mayans; in the ancient cults of Persia and Babylon, and in the immemorial Vedas. All of these have fundamental similarities, for ultimately, there is but One Mystery and One Great Work.

We believe that Freemasonry, both Classical and Liberal, is universal; a venerable branch of the Western Mystery Tradition. The Egyptian Rite is popular in almost every part of the world - the Americas, the Caribbean, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Eastern Europe, Israel, West and South Africa, Iceland, and many other places.

It is a fact that many Members of other obediences of Masonry seek to join us sub rosa, and occult orders favour Egyptian Masonry for its openly mystical approach and contribution to the growth of modern occultism. There are Lodges of Memphis-Misraïm in operation in many parts of the world, and we acknowledge them, and all other forms of Masonic Obedience, in amity and mutuality.

Let us all embrace each other with the F.'. P.'. of F.'.

Despite diversity, there is strength in unity, and ultimately, all Freemasonry is UNIVERSAL.

We also believe that all Masonic, Rosicrucian, Hermetic, Gnostic and Esoteric Orders are part of a cultural continuum, and should be mutually supportive.

The EMO UK is a mixed gender Order, with mixed gender Lodges. Although the Memphis-Mizraim tradition as a whole allows the option of single gender Lodges, we believe that a Lodge is balanced on all levels when it is inclusive. We welcome people of all genders among us.

The language of Masonry is old, and many of the rituals are slanted towards the male gender due to grammatical as well as historical conditions of the past. As an Order of mixed Lodges, we aim to correct this gender bias where we can. We never perpetuate outmoded racial, social, religious, ethnic or gender views, and will never permit these to enter our Rite at any level.

We aim to use the gender appellation each of our Members prefers - therefore we have instituted the choice for any of our Members to be addressed by the pronouns He/Him/His, She/Her/Hers and They/Them/Theirs, and the three Masonic Titles of Brother, Sister or Fellow, according to how they self-identify. We believe the choice to determine one's gender and identity for oneself to be at the heart of Liberty, even as maintaining an anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-sectarian and socially compassionate stance we believe to be at the heart of Equality.

Without them, we cannot have that true Communion which is the essence of a Lodge, and stands at the heart of Fraternity-Sorority.

By this, we believe all Worthy Masons will achieve the completion of the Temple of Humanity.

PASSING BETWEEN THE PILLARS

COINCIDENTIA OPPOSITORUM

The world is full of Light, and Shadow.

Consciousness and subconsciousness. Seen and unseen.

Order and Chaos. Joy and sorrow. Faith and doubt. Peace and conflict. Mercy and malice. What is, and what may be.

It is the Dance of Complementaries, in Force, Thought and Form.

In the Eye, in the Mirror, and in the Soul.

What the shadow hides away, the Light gently reveals.

Never give in to fear of either extreme.

Use your Light to conquer your shadow.

Use your shadow to define your Light.

For between them is Wholeness, where the Colours vibrate!

As Masons, we are taught the importance of the Level and the Plumb, to test the Horizontal and the Vertical.

Our Great Pillars could not stand on anything less than the Perfect Level and the Truly Upright.

When such alignment is attacked or destabilised, the Pillar breaks and is lost.

Harmony is an active Principle, subsisting between extremes, contrarieties, and complementary Opposites. It is also a Moral Quality; not merely one of balance, but of Purity, Integrity and Truth.

Our Venerable Brother Jung spoke to us of ENANTIODROMIA, the tendency of one extreme to pass into its opposite state - the graph line on a screen reaching to Infinity at the extreme right only to reappear at the extreme left - the radical that becomes the conservative - the rebel that becomes the oppressor.

Let us remember the dangers of the Swinging of the Pendulum, the Coils of the Serpent, writhing at the base of the Tree of Life and threatening to tear it asunder!

Let us always differentiate between Liberty and License.

Let us always differentiate between Merit and Privilege.

Let us always differentiate between Proactivity and Reactivity.

Only then may we safely judge the Orientation of self and other, whether that other be a friend, an enemy, a society, or an ideal.

This is MAAT.

All else is dust.
